As part of the Botanical Art Worldwide 2025 activities BASA is holding botanical art workshops in the Australian National Botanic Gardens, Canberra ACT.
Janet Matthews will be doing a 2 day coloured pencil workshop on Eucalyptus macrocarpa in the Dickson Studio at the Australian National Botanic Gardens on 2-3 May 2025 from 10:00am to 3:30pm each day.
The macrocarpa is a beautiful plant, yet it is quirky with its many flawed leaves and often covered in spiderwebs. A delightful subject, perfect for colour pencil which is wonderful for creating details.
Janet will step everyone through her colour pencil techniques, then she will show everyone how to draw a Eucalyptus macrocarpa. This plant has large pink red flowers and large blue grey leaves with lots of imperfections. We will also include a spider web.
Janet’s workshop are suitable for beginners as well as advanced skill levels. Experience with colour pencil is not necessary.
Janet teaches in a step by step demonstration process, then individual tuition.
A materials list will be provided. Students to supply their materials.
Janet will supply reference photos to work from.
Workshops are open to both members and non-members of BASA.

Janet is a multi-award winning artist exhibiting regularly in Australia and overseas.
She has artwork in the collection of the New York State Museum, USA and the Roberson Museum and Science Centre, New York, USA. She won a Top Award at the Focus on Nature exhibition at the New York State Museum in 2014.
In 2023 Janet’s artwork featured on Gardening Australia show.
Janet’s work has represented Australia in the World Wide Botanical exhibitions.
Janet has completed commissions for Australia Post for stamp images released in 2006 and 2009 and 2021.
In 2021 Janet’s drawing won the Wildlife Art Museum of Australia Excellence award.
