Extending the Reach of Botanical Art Through Digital Education

Awarded August 2026

The aim of this project is to develop and publish a pilot series of professionally produced online botanical art tutorials designed to make botanical art education accessible to a wider audience beyond traditional in-person workshops. The project will also establish a sustainable production workflow and educational framework to support future digital botanical art resources.

Project description

Stage 1 – Project Planning and Production Setup (Months 1–2)

The project will begin with curriculum planning, selection of botanical subjects and lesson objectives, together with the purchase and setup of essential filming equipment. Templates for downloadable worksheets and educational resources will be developed, and filming and editing workflows established to ensure a consistent and professional learning experience.

Stage 2 – Introductory Educational Resources (Months 2–4)

A series of freely available introductory videos will be produced to help reduce barriers to learning botanical art. These resources will cover topics such as selecting suitable materials, preparing a workspace, botanical observation, sketching, and transferring drawings to watercolour paper. Their purpose is to provide beginners with the confidence and practical knowledge to begin their botanical art journey.

Stage 3 – Pilot Tutorial Series (Months 4–10)

A minimum of three comprehensive botanical art tutorials will be produced, each focusing on a carefully selected botanical subject and accompanied by downloadable educational resources. The tutorials will teach botanical watercolour techniques through complete guided demonstrations, encouraging students to develop both technical skills and a deeper appreciation of plants.

Stage 4 – Publication and Evaluation (Months 10–12)

The completed tutorials and supporting resources will be published online and promoted to my existing audience. Feedback from participants will be gathered to evaluate the educational effectiveness, production workflow and user experience. The findings will inform the ongoing development of future botanical art tutorials beyond the life of the grant.

Project Outcomes

The project will create a permanent digital educational resource that introduces new audiences to botanical art regardless of geographic location. It will establish a professional production workflow and an initial collection of high-quality tutorials that will remain available beyond the grant period, providing a lasting foundation for future botanical art education while supporting BASA's mission to foster excellence, broaden participation and encourage appreciation of plants through botanical art.
