Flora 2012

The 2012 Annual BASA Members Exhibition was held in the historic Palm House, in Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden, open to the public from Saturday 8 September until Tuesday 18 September.

We were very fortunate with the weather, having warm spring sunshine on most days, attracting more than 1,500 visitors during the busy 11-day period of the exhibition. There was a very good response for entries this year. We received entry forms from 69 artists who submitted 143 original works. All 125 framed submissions were hung. Of these 125 framed works, 23 were miniatures. As well as those from Sydney, entries came from as far afield as the Central Coast, Blue Mountains, country NSW and from Victoria. Two American artists were represented – Pria Graves and Hillary Parker.

The inclusion of the miniature section, which was introduced this year, was well-received by members and visitors alike. From the feedback received, artists seemed to enjoy the idea of being able to create works that were “fun”, took less time and were easier to handle, and buyers liked the affordability and the convenience of being able to take their chosen piece home with them.

Of the five categories, Exotics was the most popular category for artists (44% of all artworks) and Australian Natives was the second most popular (almost 26% of all artworks). It was encouraging to see ten First-Time Exhibitors. As well as the original artworks, there were 54 prints (66 including copies) and 57 cards (734 separate cards) on display.

Sales this year were encouraging, especially considering the difficult economic climate. In total, 24 original art works were sold (18 framed and 6 unframed) and 20 prints. Card sales were particularly brisk – 387 cards sold.

Visitors to the exhibition were encouraged to fill out a People’s Choice
Award slip with the catalogue number of their favourite framed artwork. Congratulations to Marta Salamon for: “Dry specimens of seed cone of Banksia prionotes and Mistletoe” in watercolour and  gouache.
