Margaret Saul

Coming from a family of artists and amateur naturalists Margaret completed four years of classic art school instruction at what was then the Art School, Central Technical College, Brisbane enabling full time staff positions as – illustrator Queensland Museum and botanical illustrator Queensland Herbarium, producing illustrations for the Flora of South-eastern Queensland volumes and hundreds of species for the Ferns of Queensland, before establishing her school of botanical art in 1997 based at the Botanic Gardens - Mt. Coot-tha, Brisbane.  In 2004 after moving to the USA with her husband she was invited as the founding director for Montgomery County’s Brookside Gardens School of Botanical Art & Illustration, designing a curriculum centred on her “three mandatory criteria for botanical art”.  

Margaret is represented in publications and private and public collections around the world. Her botanical paintings of Australian flora commissioned by Dr. Shirley Sherwood are exhibited at the Sherwood Gallery, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew.  While living in the USA she also conducted master classes for institutions throughout the USA and for Dr. Sherwood in the USA and Australia.  

Memberships:  Amer.Soc.BA - serving on its Board of Directors and Educ. Co-chair and regular feature contributor “The Botanical Artist”; Hon. Life Member – BASA (Aus); BASQ; BAS - National Capital Region (USA).

While living in the hills of Chianti near Siena, Italy (2007 – 2019) Margaret embarked on painting the many species of fascinating bee orchids and other spontaneous orchids growing wild in their woodsy Chianti garden.  Since December, 2019 Margaret and her husband have sold their Tuscan house and have happily settled in Canberra, ACT “the bush capital of Australia” where she hopes to share her skills and so encourage more to appreciate native flora and our precious natural environs.
