Dianne Emery is a well-known botanical art teacher with the Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne. In this demonstration Dianne invites us to see how she developed the Sweet Chestnut painting that is on display at The Art of Botanical Illustration (TABI) exhibition until October 12. This painting won the SBA award for Excellence in Watercolour at Plantae 2024 and a Celia Rosser Honourable Mention in TABI 2024.
The Sweet Chestnut, Castanea sativa, offers some unique challenges to Botanical artists and students. The variety of textures and surfaces, requires some flexibility of technique and different methods of paint application to deal with the fine sharp spines, the glossy coppery nut and the soft furry inner casing.
Join Dianne as she talks about and shows the approach she took to her award winning painting.
